Winter has finally arrived. The nip is in the air. The strains of Jingle Bells can be heard. Undoubtedly, Kolkata is in her best moods. It is definitely pleasant to be outdoors and enjoy but if the crowd and the dust make you uneasy, we offer you the next best option – roof top restaurants. It is a double treat because you can savour both the piping hot food and the chilly evening, far away from the din.

This provides a lovely bird’s eye view of the hustle and bustle of the extremely busy New Market area while offering the guests a lovely retreat and a wide array of global cuisine. The lobby is designed in retro-style with black and white photographs featuring noted personalities of Bengal all along the wall. The restaurant has both air-conditioned as well as open air sections. The open-air section is partially covered by canopies. From the 9th floor, you would get a lovely panoramic view of the entire City of Joy flanked by the legendary Howrah Bridge on one side and Vidyasagar Setu on the other. On the menu was an array of delicacies from which we tasted Afghani Ghost Kebab, Shabnam Parluft and Burmese Khawseuy.
The kebabs are cooked with Afghan spices prepared in-house and cashew paste. This lends a unique sweet taste to the kebabs that melt in your mouth. The Shabnam Parluft is a dish of mushrooms stuffed with different kinds of vegetables and paneer and then grilled in tandoor. This is so nicely done that it’s very hard to differentiate between the mushrooms and the vegetables. The resulting taste is an eclectic one that strikes you instantly. The Khawauey is prepared here following the authentic Burmese recipe. The presence of green chilies does not make it very hot. The coconut milk creates a very nice contrast with lemon wedges, bell peppers and garlic.
The food and the ambience both will perk you up for the next visit.

Located just opposite Gariahat Pantaloons, this place is a nice retreat for people of all age groups. This location is the commercial hot-spot of South Kolkata and yet a nice place at quite a competitive pricing. The rooftop is popular among younger generations, while the other sections have sitting arrangements for families, stags and even a whole bar section. The decor relies on low lighting with lovely mood lights at the bar counter. The LED plays the popular sports events so that you do not feel bored even when your drink alone.
Here, we started with mocktails and moved on to Pan Fried Fish, Butter Garlic Prawn and Chicken Hakka
Noodles. Quantity-wise, all the dishes are good enough for two people. The Chicken Hakka Noodles is prepared in the normal Indo-Chinese style. The point to notice in this dish is the minimal oil residue left in your plate.
The Pan Fried Fish, garnished with onion stalks, has a lovely soothing taste and not very spicy too. This has a unique taste and the onion stalks tempers the taste as well.
Butter Garlic Prawn is a gravy dish, where you would see the coarse grains of garlic in the gravy, but you would be able to savour its taste in every piece of prawn that you pick up separately. The butter is not evident straightaway, but the pieces melt in your mouth.

This is situated in the food court of the Mani Square Mall. Their table-spread is huge, comprising the
entire terrace along with a covered banquet hall as well. The terrace overlooks the adjacent Coast Guard
Complex and a part of the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass on the left. At night, it is a nice contrast with darkness enveloping the scarcely lit Coast Guard Complex and the moving lights of the vehicles on the Bypass. We ordered for Indian Chicken Combo and the Mutton Biryani Combo.
The Biryani Combo is served with a huge portion of Mutton Biryani cooked in the Kolkata Biryani style and a large piece of Chicken Chaap. The Chicken Chaap looked very spicy but fortunately it did not take its toll on the stomach. This classical Mughlai combo was quite filling too.
The Indian Chicken Combo comprises a piece of naan, a portion of rice, a dal and three dishes of chicken. This is again a wholesome offering for a person by every means. The dishes are well-prepared and cooked in an open-kitchen.
Here, you can pay the exact amount by credit cards, the only one of its kind among the food courts of the city.

Among the few 5-Star hotels in Rajarhat, Splash is definitely one of the loveliest retreats. They have divided the rooftop into a poolside section and a live Bar- B-Q on the 6th floor. The poolside mesmerizes you with the side view of the main runway of the airport. The poolside is used for Sunday Sundowners, the sunset party as well as for romantic candle-light couple dinners. These dinners are full-course
and allow the couple to enjoy their champagne on the pool side chairs in between the courses.
The live Bar-B-Q section is flanked by cabanas on one side and a bar counter on the other. They have special Bar-B-Q’s cooked in front you and you can also let the chef know how well you want your barbeque to be cooked. This counter is open from 6 pm to midnight during winters. The rest of the year, they serve out of their kitchen. Each cabana can accommodate about 24 people and are available on private bookings as well. These are also used for several Sangeet ceremonies, marriage proposals, etc.
and rightly so as the arrangement of lights in this section are lovely. The disco lights from the bar dazzle you and the mood lights in the cabanas would enthrall you. The ambience simply blows you off your feet.
The food here is equally good, bringing in cuisines from different parts of the world. They conduct an
international food festival almost every second month. They leverage their multinational presence to actually get chefs from different corners of the globe to entertain the food connoisseurs of the city.
We had Soya Garlic Chicken, Splash Vegetarian Delight and Jerk Spiced Chicken. The Soya Garlic Chicken is cooked according to the standard Indo-Chinese recipe. It is just slightly spicy while the chicken pieces are tender. The Splash Vegetarian Delight is a platter of grilled vegetables consisting of potatoes, bell peppers and mushrooms. These are grilled just to the right temperature so they imbibe the flavour of all the spices in them. These can be ideal substitutes for grilled chicken if you are not in the mood for non-vegetarian fare on a day. The Jerk Spiced Chicken, one of their signatures from the grill, have pieces
of chicken marinated with Caribbean spices prepared in house. This spicy dish would tingle your taste buds enough for the taste to linger on for hours.
So, this winter, with quite a few options available, dine on the roof-top and be at the top of the world.
