Flury's A Tradition
Dear readers, this issue onwards, we are starting this new section where we will be highlighting a food joint par excellence. Since Christmas and New Year is just round the corner, we decided to zoom in on Flury's — the tearoom that shares an umbilical bond with us.
One cannot really imagine Park Street without Flury's. The tearoom, founded in 1927 by Joseph and Frieda Flurys, has been as favourite as the Dundee cake or the Yule Log that is sold here during Christmas. The long queue outside Flury's a day or two before 25th December is a tradition unto itself which goes beyond the conventional realms of caste, creed and religion. And this tradition has continued over ages. Flury's, which at present is owned by the Apeejay Surrendra group, glorifies a warm relationship which has grown over the years.
For those of us, who are born before 2004, the snow-white walls, the tall pillars and the brown sofas at Flury's exuded an old-warm charm that was oh, so British. Remember the times when you have hurried to grab a seat by the floor-to-ceilings windows just to see the world go by even as you enjoyed a cup of hot coffee? Ah, Flury’s is all about nostalgia.
On 22nd December, 2004, Flury's revealed its bright new look to the world. The old-timers were initially skeptical. With a touch of trepidation, they entered their favourite tearoom, only to discover that it had got a physical makeover that resembled any 'turn-of-the-century European tearoom' . It's soul was still the same — it was still timeless in its appeal. The ambience still had the warmth to make people from all age groups feel at home. “At Flury’s, we value relationship. People come here to relax, to read, to chat. Till date, we have a set of old-timers who visit us everyday just to have Baba cakes and a cup of tea or coffee. We know they will be coming in and so, we always set aside a few Baba cakes for them. The new generation, too, love the place. I have seen couples proposing to one another, people breaking up and bonding again. Why, I have even attended the weddings of many of our regular customers. People call me from abroad to know how they can get to Flury's during their visit to Kolkata. It is part of the peoples' existence,” says Sudip Dey, manager, Flury’s.
Indeed, it is. And not just in our lives, Flury's has made a mark all over the world. Hence, when it won the 'Most Stylish Place Trophy' at the MTV-Lycra awards in 2006, none of us raised our brows in surprise. We know that there's no place in the world like Flury's. It is a heritage, we are all proud of.
