Wheel War V
Sunday, March 8, turned out to be a day of contrasts for Kolkatans. Traffic at the central part of the city was completely stalled due to a political meeting at Brigade Parade Ground while New Town, Rajarhat, witnessed 60 cars zooming at top speed at the annual drag meet for 4-wheelers -‘Wheel War V’ sponsored by Poorav’s Commando – an energy drink and organised by 'Kolkata on WHEELS'.
A Drag Race is a format of motorsports in which cars or motorcycles (specially prepared for the purpose) compete, often two at a time, to be the first to cross a set finish line. The race follows a short, straight course from a standing start over a measured distance of 400 metres with an additional braking distance of 300 metres.
Competitors had gone through scrutiny of their vehicles a day before. Team WHEELS had also set the stage ready through overnight preparation. At Street #501 in New Town, just opposite Eco Park, two racing tracks, each 400 metres long – were laid out adjacent to each other. Chief Guest
Debashis Sen, Chairman and MD of WBHIDCO flagged off the event while expressing his delight in being part of the event.
Engines roared, wheels spun and there was high octane excitement all around. Four-wheelers pitted against each other in two classes – Stock and Modified, were further divided into categories depending upon their cubic capacity (cc) and competed through various rounds. The who’s who of eastern India’s motor sporting circuit along with the upcoming city racers turned on the heat further.
The opening race was run by Tathagata Mukherjee - the first Bengali Formula LGB 4 racing driver. Then, in between the races, the spectators got a chance to see several of the supercars and premium ones -Jaguar F type, Porsche Boxter and Mercedes SL63 showcasing a blend of speed and opulence. The cherry-topping was provided by Golam Momen with his Ferrari 458 Italia.
The special attraction of the day was however, the creation of Subharup Sadhukhan - a mechanical engineering student, who made a brand new racing car with a 1997 Maruti Esteem engine. It turned out to be a real crowd puller.
Spectators also enjoyed beautiful models of the latest launches by Co-sponsor- Volvo, Wheeling Partner-Renault and Associate Partner-Fiat. Charnock Hospital was the Medical Partner. Organised by 'Kolkata on WHEELS', the event could be succesfully accomplished with guidance from Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India, support from Elite Car Club Kolkata and Jharkhand Motorsports Club as Technical Associate.
