  • Wheel War V

Sunday, March 8, turned out to be a day of contrasts for Kolkatans. Traffic at the central part of the city was completely stalled due to a political meeting at Brigade Parade Ground while New Town, Rajarhat, witnessed 60 cars zooming at top speed at the annual drag meet for 4-wheelers -‘Wheel War V’ sponsored by Poorav’s Commando – an energy drink and organised by 'Kolkata on WHEELS'. A Drag Race is a format of motorsports in which cars or motorcycles (specially prepared for the purpose) compete, often two at a time, to be the first to cross a set finish line. The race follows a short, straight course from a standing start over a measured distance of 400 metres with an additional braking distance of 300 metres. Competitors had gone through scrutiny of their vehicles a day before. Team WHEELS had also set the stage ready through overnight preparation. At Street #501 in New Town, just opposite Eco Park, two racing tracks, each 400 metres long – were laid out adjacent to each other. Chief Guest Debashis Sen, Chairman and MD of WBHIDCO flagged off the event while expressing his delight in being part of the event. Engines roared, wheels spun and there was high octane excitement all around. Four-wheelers pitted against each other in two classes – Stock and Modified, were further divided into categories depending upon their cubic capacity (cc) and competed through various rounds. The who’s who of eastern India’s motor sporting circuit along with the upcoming city racers turned on the heat further. The opening race was run by Tathagata Mukherjee - the first Bengali Formula LGB 4 racing driver. Then, in between the races, the spectators got a chance to see several of the supercars and premium ones -Jaguar F type, Porsche Boxter and Mercedes SL63 showcasing a blend of speed and opulence. The cherry-topping was provided by Golam Momen with his Ferrari 458 Italia. The special attraction of the day was however, the creation of Subharup Sadhukhan - a mechanical engineering student, who made a brand new racing car with a 1997 Maruti Esteem engine. It turned out to be a real crowd puller. Spectators also enjoyed beautiful models of the latest launches by Co-sponsor- Volvo, Wheeling Partner-Renault and Associate Partner-Fiat. Charnock Hospital was the Medical Partner. Organised by 'Kolkata on WHEELS', the event could be succesfully accomplished with guidance from Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India, support from Elite Car Club Kolkata and Jharkhand Motorsports Club as Technical Associate.

  • Wheel War III

the city magazine dedicated to the motorists of Kolkata- organized the “JK Tyre Wheel War III”- a pulsating drag race for 4-wheelers at Rajarhat's Action Area III. The event which took place on June 1 and 16 was conducted with technical assistance from BengalMotor Sports Club (BMSC) and held under the guidance of Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI).With JK Tyre & Industries Ltd as the Title Sponsor and Volkswagen as the Motoring Partner, the motorsportevent could be held only with the help and cooperation extended by West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (HIDCO) and New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA). The drag race “JK Tyre Wheel War III” had 72 participants to go flat out on a stretch of400 metres - pitted against each other - two at a time. The first among the two competitors to cross the finish line was the winner. It was a sheer battle of man and machine with the engines at their fullest throttle. A lively crowd that had gathered to see the spectacle was hushed into silence when dream machines like Porsche, BMW, Audi and Mercedes dragged against each other over the 400 - metre tracks.Everyone, including the motoring enthusiasts who had come to cheer the beastly engines and the locals, were enthralled and left agape by the terrific show of the might of cars. There are audio tricks as well. Anyone talking inside the column's entrance can be clearly heard at the top of the stairwell so many metres above. Near the top, the stairs become ultra-narrow, which increases the urgency of the inevitable anticipation. Then, like the burst of freedom at the top of all such vertical tunnels, light, high Maidan ionosphere (it seems), and altered realities present themselves, proving that we have arrived at a castle in the air.” After the event, all the participants and the organizers were in for a treatat Agora – The Club, at Axis Mall, the hospitality partner, to let their hair down for a cocktail and dinner party.
