Indian auto manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra concluded an eventful second half 2018 with the launch of the all-new Mahindra Alturas G4 with prices starting at Rs 26.95 lakh (ex-showroom, India). Mahindra’s new flagship SUV will be available in two variants – Alturas G4 2WD and Alturas G4 4WD, and latter is priced at Rs 29.95 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
The word ‘Alturas’ means pinnacle which is quite an apt name for the new SUV considering the new Alturas G4 will sit on the top of the Mahindra portfolio in India. The Mahindra Alturas G4 will compete with the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, Skoda Kodiaq, Honda CR-V and even the Isuzu MU-X.
The Alturas G4 is essentially a re-badged version of the SsangYong G4 Rexton which was first showcased in India during the Auto Expo 2018. In terms of external appearance, the Mahindra Alturas G4 remains mostly unchanged from the SsangYong G4 Rexton, with the only noticeable difference being the new grille, which is the signature Mahindra look with bold vertical chrome slats and the brand logo sitting at the centre. The Mahindra Alturas G4 SUV features HID headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lamps, along with a macho front bumper which comes with a second set of LED DRLs which doubles up as the cornering lamps.
The Mahindra Alturas G4 also features a set of 18-inch alloy wheels, ORVMs with integrated turn signal lights, and large roof rails. At the rear, the Alturas G4 features wraparound LED taillamps, a roof-mounted spoiler with integrated brake lights, and the Alturas G4 name lettered just above the loading lip.
Step inside the passenger cabin of the Mahindra Alturas G4 and you will be welcomed by dual tone Nappa leather interior, leather-finished door trims and soft-touch dashboard, LED cabin lights and a sunroof with anti-pinch function. The Alturas G4 also features a 7-inch fully-digital instrument cluster, 3-zone climate control, an 8-way power-adjustable driver seat and electronic parking brakes. It also comes equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 3D view camera and rear parking assist, rain sensing wiper and smart power tailgate.
The 2018 Mahindra Alturas G4 is launched as a diesel-only variant and will be powered by a 2.2-litre, four-cylinder, BS-6 ready diesel engine that is tuned to belt out a maximum of 180 PS (178 bhp) at 4000 rpm, and develop a peak torque of 420 Nm at 1600 – 2600 rpm. The powertrain is mated to a 7-speed automatic torque converter sourced from Mercedes-Benz and comes with optional 4WD as well.
In terms of safety, the Mahindra Alturas also comes with nine airbags, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD) and Electronic Stability Programme (EPS), along with other safety features like ARP, HDC, HAS, BAS, and ESS.
The Mahindra Alturas G4 SUV is being exclusively sold through a separate high-end showroom within the existing “World of SUVs” dealerships which have been created with the objective to redefine customer experience, with regards to both sales and after-sales. These outlets are equipped with advanced digital technology to provide an enhanced and immersive high-end experience for customers.
The Alturas G4 is being built in the company’s automotive plant at Chakan near Pune, Maharashtra.
