Finally, Maruti has introduced a compact SUV – Vitara Brezza. Perhaps, its significance to the biggest Indian car manufacturer can be better appreciated when you consider that this maiden product was entirely conceptualised, designed and developed in India, solely for the domestic customers, keeping in mind their distinctive requirements and Indian roads.
Built on Suzuki’s global C platform, the Vitara Brezza measures just under 4 metre in length. A front-wheel drive with an upright stance, it possesses the stylish and smart look of a proper SUV. The Brezza is characterised by a chrome-rich grille flanked by neat headlights that, in top-end versions, comes with projector units and LED running lights. There’s a neat shoulder line and cladding at the base of the doors along with the partly visible scuff plates underneath, lending Brezza that sturdy look. In a bid to give the Vitara Brezza a ‘floating roof’ the A, B and C pillars are in black, while the roof and D-pillar are painted in the body colour or contrasting shades of black or white.
Further, Maruti offers three accessory packages, namely Glamour, Sporty and Urban, to allow buyers the option of personalising their cars in terms of appearance.
Though Brezza isn’t a very tall SUV, the cabin is set at a very convenient height which makes getting in and out easy even for the well-endowed. Up front, one gets an excellent view, thanks to the well-padded seats with the low-set dashboard. The middle portion that hosts the infotainment system is smartly framed with silver highlights framed in black plastics. The dashboard comes with twin glove boxes – the upper one being a cooler and the other – a generous storage area in the console between the seats.
The cabin width is surprisingly good with the space in the back quite sufficient to seat three and offers adequate knee room and enough headroom. Rear seat comfort is good as well and the inclusion of a fold-out centre armrest is also convenient.
The Brezza is available in six variants with the top-end ZDi+ cars offered with Maruti’s SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment unit and supports Apple CarPlay. Top variants cars also get push button start, reverse camera, cruise control, auto headlights, rain-sensing wipers, power folding mirrors and dual airbags and ABS. A driver-side airbag is standard fit on the base LDi and VDi models and buyers have the option to purchase a safety package that brings with it passenger-side airbag and anti-lock brakes.
The whopping 328-litre boot space can be extended by lifting the rear seat base and folding the 60:40 split seat backs to create a completely flat luggage space.
The Maruti Vitara Brezza has been launched with the highly successful DDiS 200, 4-cylinder, 1.3-litre turbo-diesel engine that produces 66 bhp and a strong 200 Nm torque. On driving the Brezza, both within the traffic prone areas of Pune and beyond, on the beautiful highways and over the hilly terrains, Team WHEELS found the vehicle to be adequately powered and surprisingly quick too. At 1197 kg, Vitara Brezza sprints from 0 to 100 kmph in just under 14 seconds making it much quicker than its competitors- the Ford Ecosport and Mahindra TUV 300. Brezza, the diseal SUV, which comes with perfect gear ratios, moves quite smoothly on soft throttles. It does a 160 kmph so smoothly that one may actually have to check the speedometer in order to let the realisation sink in.
Above the 2,000 rpm there’s a sudden rush of power which steadily picks up till a remarkable 5,300 rpm.
The soft clutch with smooth gear shifts make Brezza ideal for a stop-start city drive. The Vitara Brezza is a confident highway cruiser too with ample power reserve in overdrives.
With one of the best in class ground clearance of 198 mm and 16-inch wheels, the Brezza does a good job of gliding smoothly over the potholes and frequent speed-breakers inside the city. The effective isolation of the passenger cabin with a mildly firm suspension and the Pendulum engine mount system, it is effective enough to absorb all the noise, vibration and harshness along with the bodyroll of an SUV.
With claims of 24.3 km per litre of mileage and best in class features at an attractive price range of Rs 7.32-Rs 10.05 lakh (ex-showroom, Kolkata), Maruti Vitara Brezza is going to be a sure winner!
