The launch of Duster in 2012 not only made Renault a house-hold name in India but it also sparked the need for big powerful rides at affordable prices. So, like its elder brother Duster, the all new Renault KWID is all set to be a game changer, this time in the small car segment.
Available primarily in 4 variants – STD, RXE, RXL and RXT, there is also the RXE (O) and the RXT (O) with the safety feature of the airbag. We test drove the RXT variant of the KWID in city traffic and went off-road to get a feel of the newest kid on the block.
The First Look
If we go by the saying ‘the first impression is the last impression’ then the KWID surely makes a statement at the very first glance. The head-turner has the built of a SUV from all angles. Be it the ‘bold structured front grille’, the solid wheel arch cladding or the sturdy 180mm ground clearance, on the exterior the KWID power packs a strong road presence. The aggressive styling on the bonnet and the integrated roof spoilers play their part in lending the sporty look and the ‘c – shaped signature headlamps’ give the car the grand feeling of an SUV.
So in keeping with the design, the car provides the high and mighty appeal of an SUV which is not available to any competitor in the small car segment.
Powertrain & Performance
Unlike the grand exterior, the KWID is a 799cc, 3 cylinders under the hood. But with maximum power output of 54 PS @ 5678 rpm and maximum torque of 72 NM @ 4386 rpm, the engine performs well under the pressure of the throttle. The 5-speed manual ‘syncromesh’ transmission is engineered to slightly under deliver in the 2nd gear for optimum fuel efficiency but provide a huge thrust once shifted into the 3rd gear.
In city-driving, the engine gives the right punch to make swift overtakes within city limits. That coupled with the subtle overall width of 1579 mm increases its maneuverability and makes driving through narrow traffic spaces effortless. Also, the upright seating position gives a better driving view and a commanding stance for greater driving pleasure in everyday traffic.
With frequent road bumps and once in a while off-roading, the 180 mm ground clearance comes handy. The R13 tyres offer good grip on the loose gravel and the soft steering does its trick there too. The mature power delivery in the higher gears helps maintain traction in both wet and dry off-roading conditions.
In empty stretches, the KWID didn’t fail to impress too. We managed to take the car up to a swift 110km/hr in the short stretch on Strand Road near Prinsep Ghat. The absence of any body-roll at high speed turns and the sturdy feeling of grip even at high speeds make KWID a good performer here too.
Styling and Interior
Smart is an appropriate word when it comes to describing the intelligently crafted interior of the KWID. From incorporating power window switches at the dash board to increase the sideways leg-space by shortening the hand rest, to easily tucking in 2 glove boxes, the entire interior design ensures optimum space usage. The whopping boot space at 300 litres offers the best in class storage space and 4 plus-sized adults can comfortably be seated in the car. The RXT variant comes with MediaNAV feature and a 9 inch touch screen. The console has a built-in GPS maps feature and radio. It also provides Bluetooth connectivity and has a USB port along with an AUX-in-port.
A refreshing change comes in the form of the big-digit digital speedometer and the on-board gear-shift indicator.
At ex-showroom price range of Rs 3.31 – Rs 4.42 lakhs, the KWID is an absolute value for money. The sporty engine coupled with the looks and features of an SUV complimented with the price at which it is being offered- the all new KWID is a real hit!
