USED CAR: Accelerate your dreams

The Indian consumer, of late, has woken up to the positive value equation of pre-owned cars, commonly termed as ‘Used Car’. Pre-owned cars offer higher flexibility and reach out to prospective car owners, both first-time or experienced buyers, due to the price advantage and the value package on offer. Buying a second-hand car is no longer a taboo. More and more customers are now exchanging their old cars for second-hand cars, unlike in the past when buyers would sell old cars to part-fund the purchase of a new car. This trend is growing with more trusted brands entering the segment who are offering real time value that is logically priced, thoroughly inspected and completely refurbished, duly certified by the company engineers, adding warranty-Road Side Assistance to it, providing finance, insurance, ownership transfer facility in house etc. In fact, used-car buyers can choose cars from organized used-car website on the basis of make and model of car, distance run, colour, certification, warranty-RSA, tentative price etc. using their laptop or mobile! Similarly, sellers can post cars for sale too. Reputed finance players like HDFC Bank, Mahindra & Mahindra Finance Service Ltd, Magma Finance, Shriram Finance, ICICI Bank etc. have started lending for used cars and cars bought from organized authorised dealers – customers can get these benefits from that one-stop shop only.

The organized pre-owned car business was pioneered by country’s largest car maker Maruti Suzuki way back in 2000, under the brand name Maruti True Value. “At present, Mahindra First Choice Wheels is the leader in the Rs 60,000-crore multi-brand used car market with 255 nationwide network of dealers including 10 in Calcutta which buy and sell multibrand certified used car at every price point,” claims Mr. Debdut Bagchi, General Manager, Mahindra First Choice Wheels Ltd. Some of the other well known certified used car branded  dealers in India are, Maruti True Value, Honda Auto Terrace, Tata Motor Assured, Toyota U Trust, Hyundai Advantage and Das Welt Auto (Volkswagen), more are expected to come to India. The branded used car chains have realized the potential of the used car market. “Mahindra & Mahindra was the first to enter with ‘Multibrand’ Used Car portfolio with Mahindra First Choice Wheels,” further claimed Mr. Bagchi.

“Never knew – owning  a car could be so easy, convenient and smooth”  – this could be the common refrain since the cost of two to three-year-old used car is 35-45% less than a new one. Moreover, factors like warranty, service support, finance and insurance facility are also the driving forces propelling the pre-owned car market. Till a few years ago, in the absence of organised players, more than 60% of all used car sales took place among friends and relatives. The remaining sales were managed by local unorganised dealers or brokers. With the organised players stepping in, the used cars market has benefited from better retail network, credibility, transparency, easy availability of finances, post sales service and brand assurance for all-India coverage of warranty and RSA service. Hence, both the seller and buyer are assured of achieving the perceived value for every transaction viz selling or buying investment. These reforms have injected transparency and convenience in the used car market. Organised used car showrooms also help prospective customers to pick and choose cars from various brands and segments. They can exchange their old car of any brand there itself. Hence, this certified used car business is growing at a whopping 22% CAGR in India in the past 4 years. While new car business, after 10 years of regular growth, is now at a down turn, organized used car players are confident about achieving double-digit growth figures in the coming years. And so we can see an increase in touch points of Authorized Used Car Boutiques. In this era of brand conscious Indian consumers the three important criteria to decide on any products are trust, convenience and price.

According to leading players of the car market, their used car ventures are paying handsome dividends. Hence, the companies are now going for used car outlets too. The branded used car outlets are now dealing in multiple brands. They know that they can win over customer loyalty by offering one-stop shop for all queries. We hope all the top brands will come to our city with their used car outlets. It would allow more and more young Kolkatans to upgrade their lifestyle undeterred by the high cost of a new car. The trend has caught on – a car owner, who bought a six-year-old car, is now graduating to a three-year-old car; there is a constant scope for upgrade. Check it Out

  • The Smart Card or Registration Certificate contains the first consideration, the number of previous owners and their addresses so in case of doubts they can be contacted. It contains chassis and engine number and so can be checked for tampering if any.
  • If the reading on the odometer and the condition of the car do not match, opt for an inspection.
  • Check the engine for any unnecessary noise and the exhaust for dark or white smoke while idling or accelerating.
  • Examine the undercarriage. The bodyline will indicate if the car was involved in any accident. Open the bonnet and observe whether the car has been repainted.
